WHAT WAS UP WITH HOUSE?

I'm confused.
I watched House tonight. What do you think? What?! You don't watch House? (mutter-mutter) He's the perfect protagonist to make you feel better. He does things for the wrong reason. He is usually successful but only at diagnoses--not at life or relationships, which we all know is the important aspects of this life. He has only one friend and he is a crappy friend back. Who couldn't feel good about themselves comparing?

Questions I need answered. Why did the woman come out of her catatonic state? Why did the Super-flying-man-with-the-eventual-broken-leg-and-ruptured-spleen know to give her the music box. How could red-haired-piano-playing-woman be away from her family to have an intimate moment with House? And yet she never told him she had a family? She probably realized he'd be the world's crappiest step-dad. And why did he get out of the mental institution in one episode? There was a good four to eight weeks worth of opportunity for a change of scene and new characters.

I think I'm bummed. I wanted weeks and weeks of mental institution. I wanted to live it vicariously--so in case I ever have to go, I can be prepared.

Now what am I going to do?

IS IT NONSTOP NUDE OR PINK PASSION?

I have a new favorite brand of fingernail polish. (Yes, this is going to be a boring post. Click off and go do something interesting, and then report back. I may want to do it too.) I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love it because it stays on and really doesn't chip--"Sally Hansen NO CHIP 10 Day Nail Color." I hate it because it takes forever to dry and so I smudge it. Also, one coat is not enough but if you put the second coat on too early it NEVER dries and you mess all the fingernails up. Also, for some reason, an hour after I put a coat on, bubbles appear. It's freaky. Then, I have to start over.

So, I put on one coat tonight and will do the other one in the morning. And then, since I have places to go and things to do, I'll probably have to start over because of the smudging thing.

And I only have two bottles of the stuff. One color I love and the other I don't love so much, or at all. And, of course, I don't remember which is which. So, I going with Nonstop Nude and hope I'm right. (It's on the right. Not that you care, but still.)

And I can already see I have a problem. Two nails have too much polish on the tips--so they probably won't dry properly and one nail doesn't have enough anywhere. But I can't add more or....

Oh, who the heck cares?

Go to bed, friends. Or go eat breakfast. Or clean something. Or do some office work. Or go to the movies. Or get a B12 shot. Or something. I vote for the B12 shot. That's what I'm going to do in the morning.

But right now I'm going to bed after watching "House" so I can see that there is a room for every cantankerous fool in the world and so there is probably room for me.

INSOMNIA

Nine years ago I had insomnia. My neighbor had insomnia too. I walked the neighborhood. She did laundry. I filled the night with quiet footsteps and thoughts. She filled the night with the scent of laundry detergent and fabric softener. I loved the scent of her detergent so much that I changed mine. She did not hear my thoughts so she didn't change her opinions, habits or normal behavior to quirks.

I never saw another person at 2:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m., etc, but I did see an occasional car. That always frightened me. Who was driving in our neighborhood at that hour? What were they up to? I didn't carry a cell phone nor a weapon. My karate skills were kind of the "wax on, wax off," variety and I can't stand on one leg for longer than a few seconds.

I always went right home when a car came into the neighborhood and hoped I didn't fumble the key in the lock before bad men came to kill me. They never did, of course. The next night, when I couldn't sleep I went back out, into the night--perhaps an egg salad sandwich is missing from my picnic basket.

Last night, for the first time in about eight years I had insomnia . At 1:30 I gave up and got up to watch recorded "House" episodes because it's eight years later, the world has changed--more crazies driving the neighborhood at night--and probably the biggest reason: I'm lazy, so I watched three House episodes instead.

Since I haven't watched House from the beginning and since some of these were recorded in 2004 and some in 2009 and some, somewhere in between, I'm wondering things like, "How did Cuddy get a baby?" "Who killed himself and why?" (I only saw about three minutes of that episode--where Cameron said, "He's cold.") "Did Foreman, Chase and Cameron get fired and if so why? And if they did how did they get re-hired? And while they were fired what was with all the numbered people wanting to fill the vacancy? Is this a 'teaching' hospital?" See how much I don't know. "Why is Wilson so nice and why is House so...so...House-ish?" And my final question, "Why doesn't House get fired!?" I mean, really, let's face it, he's pretty much a law unto himself.

Oh, one more question. "Why can't normal hospitals have a House?" I wonder if my neighbor has answers. I see her light on at all hours of the night so I know she is back in an insomnia mode and maybe she watches TV while folding socks.

At 4:00 a.m. I still couldn't sleep but went to bed anyway. As I lay there, staring at the dark ceiling, I wondered one last thing. Why do I like House so much when the mere mention of his name sends my dear husband from the room, muttering and questioning my sanity.

These are questions that feed insomnia.

TODAY'S LIST: WHY I AM TIRED

  1. I stay up too late, getting my fix of back episodes of "House."
  2. I stay up too late, reading blogs.
  3. I stay up too late, trying to find interesting things to eat, even though I said I wouldn't eat after 7:00 because Oprah says it's THE rule. Oprah doesn't know everything. Does she? I usually don't eat it, I just look for it. I DON'T EAT IT PAM, I PROMISE.
  4. I stay up too late, worrying about things like, is it spelled "to" or "too." The Grammar Nazi's should tell me so I can go to bed--after watching "House," of course.
  5. I'm taking YET another round of antibiotics.
  6. I'm worrying.
  7. I'm old.
  8. And perhaps moldy.
  9. I'm dying. Aren't we all? Don't panic. I'm pretty sure we are.
  10. I think I should blog every day and then when I can't I have the stupor's and who can go to bed with the stupors? I usually go to bed with Phil but maybe the stupors are more interesting and maybe they snore less.
  11. I have too much to do and not enough a) time b) ambition c) talent d) motivation e) energy--because I stay up to late.
  12. I think perhaps the Epstein Bar Syndrome has reared it's ugly head. Again. That would also explain the stupors.

The end. The bitter, total end of life as we know it, as only people who stay up too late can really understand.

A GOOD SUNDAY

Today I taught in Relief Society. I had my good friend, Faye help and she did a fabulous job. She is one of the survivors, a wonderful person and a great friend.

For a couple of weeks I preparing my talk about trials and somehow, this week it switched to peace and then I kind of shook both subjects up together. I will post what I remember of what I said and the comments people made on my Starlight blog, maybe even this week. That blog has been way neglected.

When I got home from church I made the cheater's version of Cafe Rio salads--vegetarian--and then I ate twice too much. It was Fast Sunday so I was starved.
Then--I never do this--I watched four hours of TV! Three old episodes of "House"...and the last hour of "Jesse Stone, Thin Ice." I love "House" but I am the only one here who does. I sat in the kitchen on a hard kitchen chair to watch two hours of it. He is a curmudgeon for sure, but there's just something about him, if you know what I mean.

Not very consistent, this day, talking about the Savior and how to prepare, spiritually, for life and then watching TV for four hours. It makes no sense.
